Fort Concho was established in December 1867 and
is surrounded today by the
town of San Angelo, Texas. The fort was
built at the confluence of the North,
Middle, and South Concho rivers, from
which it derived its name. During the Civil
War, marauding Indians
attacked colonists on the Texas frontier by making most of
their worst raids
on moonlit nights. Following the end of the war in 1865, with more
pioneers willing to settle in the area, the Army was directed to provide
the settlers
with protection from Indian attacks.
Fort Concho played a major role in the history of both the southwestern frontier
and
"The Buffalo Soldiers". Twenty five years after the establishment
of Fort Concho,
the Indians were no longer a threat, due in large part to
the actions of the soldiers
who served at Fort Concho. Fort
Concho was also one of the major installations
where soldiers of African
descent served.
