Indians trained their horses in the art of war and hunting, as they were closely allied, until they became an extension of themselves and could race in a herd without shying or bucking their rider. Guiding his horse only by knee pressure, the Indian kept his arms free for bow and arrow or lance. The Indians managed the larger herds by breaking them into smaller groups and running them around in circles.
