Way stations were vital links that provided water
and a change of horses for the next leg of the perilous stage journey west. Here, a band of Indians
has surrounded a way station and are burning it down. They have raided
the adjoining horse corral and are taking away the horses for their own use.
Those on the next stage to pass this way may face the critical problem of
survival.
