"The sequence in which the viewer discovers the elements in a painting is
planned. In
this one a regiment of the Second Cavalry takes a short reconnaissance ride
from Fort
Ellis, Montana. The soldiers have stopped to rest the horses before
moving on to
complete the last of many such patrols before the onset of winter.
Most of the horses are watching their owners stride off to the right.
Those two Blackfoot
Indians on the left are about to be two horses richer."
