One time while driving in the car, I asked God
if He needed a friend, and would He
consider me? Immediately I felt foolish, and thought, "Yeah right,
God needs me
for a friend?" The more I thought about it though, the more I became
convinced
that's exactly what God wants from us. As a matter of fact, that's
why he created
us: for fellowship." (I John 1:3).
I know it's hard to believe that Almighty God is interested in our company,
but He's
holding His hand out, so we'd be foolish not to take it!
Since God is our example, we ought to apply that same principle to those
loved
ones that He has entrusted to us. It is not a waste of time to "hang
out" with our
kids. Not everything we do with them has to be an obvious "spiritual"
activity.
Just the doing is spiritual in itself. If God didn't think it a waste of
time to just
walk with Enoch, then I have to believe it's not a waste of time to walk
with
our kids. Or take them fishing, picnicking or any other seemingly
purposeless
activity. I heard one family refer to it as "Making Memories." I
like that!
Sometime ago I read of a famous man who told of the one day of his life
that
meant the most to him. It was the day that his father took a day off,
just to take
him fishing. As he grew older, he realized that day was a pivotal point in
his life.
As years past, his father died, and knowing that he kept a journal, he
couldn't
wait to see what his father wrote of the day that so impacted his life.
When he
turned to that page, he read:
"Spent the day fishing with my son. A day wasted."
Can you imagine the shock and disappointment of that moment?
We all know that time "flies." Making the most of even those moments where
it
doesn't appear to accomplish anything, may be accomplishing more than we
can
ever know. One thing is for sure: God approves. That's what this
painting is all
about. -Ron
